Here’s What HR Won’t Do For You…

Let's talk about a common mistake I keep seeing in companies, even after all my years in HR:

Too many companies are still playing hot potato with their people issues, and tossing them straight to HR. But here's the thing – your employees don’t report to HR!

If HR folks are doing their job right, they shouldn't be your go-to problem solvers or the first stop on the employee complaint train. I know it’s hard to hear but that role belongs to you, my dear Leader.

When I'm out there consulting with organizations, I often have to tell them that I’m not the one working with their people on a daily basis and I don’t discuss their day-to-day issues. Right?!

Here’s the deal:

Employee engagement and company culture are not built on a foundation of amazing HR practices (though those are very important).

It all comes down to the relationship with the manager. The person you report to every day and the person who makes decisions about your career, should be the one you go to and should feel comfortable communicating with - and communicates with you!

The research backs this up time and time again. You could have the friendliest, most supportive HR professional working with you, but if the manager is about as warm as a popsicle, employees will still be heading for the exit faster than you can say "resignation letter."

So, how do you change that?

Well, the best HR professionals are like master chefs - they're not just cooking up solutions, they're teaching others to cook. They're creating and developing managers, helping implement systems, and supporting organizations that can thrive without constant HR handholding.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it (and trust me, you want to):

  • Be the first point of contact for your team's issues

  • Build those strong, trust-filled relationships with your people

  • Work on your problem-solving skills (they're like muscles - the more you use 'em, the stronger they get!)

Remember, you're not alone in this. HR is still there, cheering you on from the sidelines and ready to support you. But the star player in this story is YOU – the Leader!

So, are you ready to step up to the plate?

Let's make my job as your HR professional one that supports you in being an awesome Leader, and helps you take your business to the next level! Being an Employer of Choice is way better than being an employer who watches people regularly walk out the door.

What do you think? Are you up for the challenge? Drop me a line and let's chat about how you I can help you become the Leader your team deserves!

Rooting for you - always,

Athina

(your no nonsense HR friend)

P.S. If you're feeling a bit overwhelmed by all this HR/people stuff, don't sweat it! I've got some tricks up my sleeve to help you level up your management game. Just give me a shout!
